Tower, also known as column equipment, is vertical chemical equipment for separation, absorption and other physical processes to modify composition of gas‑liquid mixtures. It features a large height‑to‑diameter ratio and various internals, which enable intimate contact between gas‑liquid, gas‑solid, liquid‑liquid or liquid‑solid phases for mass transfer, usually accompanied by heat transfer.
As non‑standard cylindrical welded equipment, it consists of shell, head and support. It is widely applied in distillation, purification, absorption and rectification for mass‑transfer and heat‑transfer between phases. According to internals structure, towers fall into tray tower and packed tower. Most towers are pressure vessels.
